Chelsea Green getting pinned immediately after becoming champion has already pissed off plenty of fans, but Road Dogg doesn’t see the problem.
After Jonathan Coachman joined the backlash over Green getting pinned on her first SmackDown as Interim WWE Women’s Champion, Road Dogg jumped onto Twitter and defended the decision. His reasoning was pretty simple: Chelsea Green isn’t suddenly supposed to become an unstoppable world-beater just because WWE put a championship around her waist.
“I’d say Chelsea can’t be a world beater, she CAN LOSE. You have to treat the CHARACTER consistently She ain’t Rhea!”
Well, that’s one way to settle the Rhea Ripley comparison. Green’s booking became a major talking point after the August 7 episode of SmackDown. Just days removed from winning the Interim WWE Women’s Championship at SummerSlam, WWE gave her the full celebration treatment with balloons, fireworks and a red carpet.
Then Fatal Influence pinned her before the night was over. Coachman hated it. The former WWE announcer argued that wrestling has always operated under a simple rule when crowning a new champion: make them stronger. Instead, he felt WWE immediately took the shine off Green and questioned why creative continues putting someone who makes almost everything she’s given work into situations where she has to take another loss.
“The one thing that we’re always taught is when you crown a new champion, you do everything in your power to make them stronger, to make them bigger.”
Road Dogg is looking at the exact same booking decision from the opposite direction. Green didn’t become champion because WWE suddenly transformed her into Rhea Ripley. Her character has always been capable of losing, getting embarrassed and finding herself in ridiculous situations before coming back the next week and making all of it entertaining. In Road Dogg’s view, putting a title around her waist shouldn’t erase that overnight.
And that’s really where the disagreement sits. Coachman believes the championship should change how WWE protects Chelsea Green. Road Dogg believes WWE changing Chelsea Green just because she’s champion would be the bigger mistake. She ain’t Rhea.
