Chelsea Green hadn’t even made it through her first night as champion before she was staring at the lights. That decision already had fans tearing into WWE after the August 7 episode of SmackDown. Now Jonathan Coachman is joining the pile-on, and he thinks the company ignored one of the oldest rules in wrestling.
Coachman took to Twitter and reacted to Chelsea Green taking the pinfall just days after winning the Interim WWE Women’s Championship at SummerSlam, arguing WWE completely dropped the ball by beating its newest champion before her reign even had a chance to get off the ground.
“Stop being petty, Machete. Oh, by the way, I was right. They should have not made her the interim champion because, just like I said, we don’t know how long Rhea Ripley will be out. Here comes the surgery, the rest of the year, and now you could have done it a week ago.”
That wasn’t even the part that bothered him most. Coachman said every wrestler is taught the same thing when someone wins a championship: build them up, make them feel bigger and give fans a reason to believe they’re the real deal. Instead, Green celebrated with balloons, fireworks and a red carpet before ending the night flat on her back after Fatal Influence scored the win.
“The one thing that we’re always taught is when you crown a new champion, you do everything in your power to make them stronger, to make them bigger.”
Coachman also couldn’t understand why it keeps happening to Chelsea Green of all people.According to him, Green has spent years turning bad creative into entertaining television, no matter what WWE has thrown at her.
“I don’t know if I have ever seen a talent take more lemons and turn them into lemonade than Chelsea Green. Every time they try to hold her back… then we’re gonna take the pin against Fatal Influence… but you also have to protect your champion. The creative team right now needs to get in the room and say, ‘Listen, why are we pissed at Chelsea Green?’ Instead of, maybe we should learn from Chelsea Green.”
He finished by throwing the question back at WWE creative. Coachman’s comments landed less than a day after fans flooded social media with many of the exact same complaints. Plenty questioned why WWE would spend the opening of SmackDown making Green feel like a champion, only to beat her before the show was over.
Chelsea Green walked into SmackDown with the biggest win of her career behind her. She walked out with plenty of fans—and now Jonathan Coachman too—wondering why WWE couldn’t wait more than a few hours before taking the shine off her biggest moment.
