Former AEW TBS Champion Maya World has been knocked out of action after undergoing a medical procedure within the past week. The exact nature of the procedure is being kept private, but the good news is that those around the situation expect her absence to be relatively short.
Fightful Select reports that World underwent the undisclosed procedure and has already been forced to pull out of several upcoming appearances. She is also not expected to be at the September 16, 2026 episode of AEW Dynamite, putting her current storyline on ice while she recovers.
The timing comes just weeks after World’s brief run with the TBS Championship came crashing to an end. Maya captured the TBS Championship from Hikaru Shida at AEW Redemption on July 26, scoring one of the biggest victories of her AEW career and securing her first singles championship with the company.
That reign didn’t last long. Britt Baker returned at AEW All In and cost Maya World the TBS Championship during World’s defense against Persephone, allowing Persephone to walk away with the title before Baker attacked Maya and revealed herself.
Maya wasn’t exactly planning to let that slide either. Earlier this month, World called out both Britt Baker and Persephone while appearing at a Texas Rangers game, making it clear she still had unfinished business with both women after losing the championship.
Now that fight will have to wait. There is currently no exact timetable for Maya World’s return, but the expectation that she will be back relatively soon is at least encouraging news for a wrestler who appeared to be heading straight into another major TBS Championship program.
Maya World had plenty of momentum before being forced onto the sidelines, and AEW now has a ready-made story waiting whenever she gets cleared to return. Between Persephone holding the championship and Britt Baker putting herself directly in Maya’s path, she won’t exactly have to search very hard for somebody to fight when she walks back through the door.
