WWE may be sitting on one of the easiest tag-team reunions on its roster, and Matt Hardy is ready for the waiting game to end. Penta and Rey Fenix have spent months building separate careers in WWE, but Hardy wants the masks back next to each other and the Lucha Brothers officially unleashed as a team again.
The subject came up on The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy while Hardy and John Alba were talking about how Penta has handled his move from AEW to WWE. Hardy believes Penta was practically built for the WWE machine because his personality is huge, his presentation stands out and WWE actually gave him the ball instead of letting him disappear into the shuffle.
“He has. He has done very well for himself. And also too, like, I mean, Penta has a larger-than-life personality. I mean, I knew when he was going to WWE he would fit in good there, you know, as long as they give him an opportunity and they put him in a position to succeed — and they have, and fortunately it has worked.”
Penta has definitely gotten opportunities. He recently defeated his own brother to earn a shot at Roman Reigns, with Penta beating Rey Fenix in the tournament final that determined Reigns’ next challenger. WWE has been perfectly willing to put the brothers on opposite sides of the ring, but plenty of fans are still waiting for the company to do the obvious thing and put them back on the same side. Hardy admitted Fenix had a much rougher start after arriving in WWE, but he thinks that situation has finally started turning around. Instead of writing Fenix off, Hardy believes the former AEW star has found some momentum and could be ready for something bigger.
“It wasn’t going very well for Rey Fenix for a while, but his luck has turned a bit and he’s had a pretty good last few months. So hopefully, hopefully things start to look up for him too.”
Then Hardy got to the part that Lucha Brothers fans really care about. He doesn’t just want Penta and Fenix succeeding separately — he wants WWE to put the team back together.
“And I do want — I do want to see them as a tag team again in WWE. I’d really like to see that.”
Hardy certainly isn’t alone in wanting it, because both brothers have already made it pretty clear that the Lucha Brothers aren’t dead. Back in July, Penta promised that the Lucha Brothers will eventually reunite, saying he doesn’t know exactly when it will happen but believes the team will come back once both men finish this chapter of their singles careers.
Fenix has basically said the same thing from the other side. He previously explained why WWE hasn’t reunited the Lucha Brothers yet, saying WWE knows fans are waiting and the brothers themselves are waiting too, but he wants the comeback to happen at the right moment instead of being thrown together just because everybody is asking for it.
The crazy part is WWE has already pulled the trigger once — they just didn’t put it on television. After the July 31 episode of SmackDown, Penta and Rey Fenix reunited in a WWE ring for the first time after Dominik Mysterio and JD McDonagh attacked Penta. Fenix made the save, the situation turned into a tag match, and the Lucha Brothers walked out with the win while television viewers missed the whole thing.
Penta has been teasing this thing for months as well. During AAA Rey de Reyes in March, Penta teased another Lucha Brothers reunion after sharing the ring with Fenix, making it even clearer that neither brother has shut the door on bringing their team back.
So WWE has two brothers who want the reunion, fans who keep asking for it, one off-camera WWE match already in the books and now Matt Hardy openly saying he wants the Lucha Brothers back together. WWE can keep squeezing singles matches out of Penta and Fenix for a little longer, but this reunion is sitting there ready to explode whenever the company finally decides to stop teasing it and put the Lucha Brothers back on television where they belong.
