Sami Callihan may be getting his foot in the door with AEW, but nothing is locked in yet.
Fightful Select added that Callihan’s recent backstage work with the company has been on a trial basis, with the possibility of something bigger developing if the arrangement goes well.
“We’re told it has been on a trial basis, and it could end up leading to more if things go well.”
Callihan has quietly been working behind the scenes at AEW Dynamite for the past three weeks and is also expected to be backstage for AEW Collision in Boston.
His role has been centered around production rather than an on-screen appearance, with Callihan helping out as a backstage producer while AEW evaluates the fit.
That explains why there has not been any announcement about Callihan officially joining the company. There does not appear to be a contract in place, and his current run is being treated as an opportunity for both sides to see whether the relationship works.
The timing is especially notable following Callihan’s abrupt departure from TNA. Callihan believed he was preparing to discuss a larger position on TNA’s creative team before instead learning that he was finished with the company. Several people within TNA had pushed for him to take on a bigger creative role after he spent months contributing as a producer, agent and in areas including marketing and merchandise.
Now, Callihan is getting the chance to prove himself behind the curtain with another major wrestling company. The trial setup gives AEW a closer look at what Callihan can bring without committing to a deal right away. It also gives Callihan a chance to turn a rough TNA exit into a permanent position with AEW.
Nothing is official yet, but this is no longer just Callihan stopping by backstage. He is being tested in a real production role, and strong work could lead to something more.
