Grayson Waller’s chaotic return during the July 28 episode of NXT has earned him an endorsement from one of WWE’s biggest names. Less than a day after Waller’s opening promo descended into complete chaos, John Cena took to Twitter with a message suggesting the outspoken Australian may have finally found what has been missing from his career.
Cena didn’t comment on the microphone getting cut or the controversy surrounding the segment. Instead, he focused on what he believed made it work, praising Waller’s authenticity and saying he’s eager to see what comes next.
“Effort + Authenticity = Respect. It appears @GraysonWWE has found his WHY. Eager to see what he does. @WWENXT”
The praise followed a return that quickly spiraled out of control. Waller opened NXT by tearing into Austin Theory, mocking his run with The New Day, taking a shot at Cruz Montana’s TNA past, dragging NXT Champion Tony D’Angelo and his family into the conversation, and blasting the entire men’s locker room before challenging Shawn Michaels to send somebody out to stop him.
That never happened. Instead, production tried to end the segment by cutting Waller’s microphone, but he simply grabbed a ringside camera and kept talking until NXT finally dumped the segment and went to commercial. The moment immediately became one of the biggest talking points coming out of Tuesday night’s show.
Cena wasn’t alone in noticing. CM Punk also praised the promo on Instagram Stories, calling it, “Frustration distilled and funneled into a bullet aimed at the competition.” With two of WWE’s biggest stars publicly backing the segment within hours, Waller’s return has suddenly become much bigger than an ordinary NXT promo.
