Darby Allin’s AEW World Championship run may have had skeptics at first, but that appears to be changing behind the scenes.
During the post-Dynamite show, Sean Ross Sapp revealed that Allin’s title reign has changed opinions within AEW, especially among people who were not fully sold on the idea when the run first started.
“This Darby Allin title run has won over a lot of people in the company who weren’t originally on board with it.”
That is a major deal for Allin, who captured the AEW World Championship by defeating MJF on the April 15 edition of AEW Dynamite. Since then, AEW has presented Allin as a fighting champion, with defenses against Tommaso Ciampa, Brody King, Kevin Knight, PAC, Konosuke Takeshita, Sammy Guevara, and Mike Bailey.
Tony Khan previously explained why AEW pulled the trigger on Allin as world champion during an appearance on the Battleground Podcast. Khan said the decision came down to Darby being on fire at the right time and proving himself in the rivalry with MJF.
“Well, I think right now Darby Allin is red hot. He is the person who had the guts to step up and fight MJF. He’s a person who successfully maybe outsmarted MJF, outworked MJF for sure and was able to take the championship.”
Khan also made it clear that Allin’s reign was never meant to be quiet or limited. AEW wanted to lean into the same fearless energy that defined his past TNT Title runs.
“We’ve seen when Darby was the TNT champion multiple times. This is a guy who takes on all comers who will fight anybody, any place, any time. And we have so many great wrestlers here in AEW willing to step up to the challenge.”
Allin now has another massive test ahead of him, as he is set to defend the AEW World Championship against MJF in a Hair vs. Title match at Double or Nothing. With backstage reaction seemingly turning in his favor, Allin heads into the show with more momentum than he had when the reign began.
Darby Allin’s world title run was always going to be a gamble for AEW, but the backstage reaction suggests the company’s confidence in him is growing. Whether he leaves Double or Nothing still champion or not, Allin has already managed to win over people who were unsure about putting him at the top.
