Tony Khan is pulling back the curtain on why Darby Allin was chosen to lead AEW as world champion, and it all comes down to timing, momentum, and proving himself against one of the company’s biggest stars.

During an appearance on the Battleground Podcast, Khan was asked why this moment was the right time to put the company on Darby Allin’s shoulders. Khan didn’t hesitate to explain that Allin’s rise wasn’t accidental, but the result of stepping up and delivering when it mattered most. Khan pointed directly to Darby Allin’s clash with MJF as the turning point, explaining that Allin earned his spot at the top rather than simply being handed it through storyline direction.

“Well, I think right now Darby Allin is red hot. He is the person who had the guts to step up and fight MJF. He's a person who successfully maybe outsmarted MJF, outworked MJF for sure and was able to take the championship.”

Khan also made it clear that Darby’s championship reign isn’t meant to be slow or limited. Instead, AEW plans to lean into what made him stand out in previous title runs — taking on anyone willing to step up. He explained that Darby Allin’s history as TNT Champion proved he thrives under pressure, especially when facing frequent challengers who want to test him.

“We've seen when Darby was the TNT champion multiple times. This is a guy who takes on all comers who will fight anybody, any place, any time. And we have so many great wrestlers here in AEW willing to step up to the challenge.”

Khan also referenced Darby Allin’s early world title defenses as proof that this aggressive pace is already underway. Rather than slowing down as champion, Allin has continued working at the same intense level fans have come to expect. He specifically pointed to a recent world title match that helped reinforce confidence in Darby’s ability to lead the company as its top champion.

“Darby's first defense of the championship I thought was a phenomenal match. Darby Allin last week versus Tommaso Ciampa for the world title was an incredible main event in my opinion, on Wednesday night Dynamite last week.”

Khan wrapped up his thoughts by stressing that Darby Allin’s identity as a fighting champion is exactly what AEW wants from its top titleholder right now. Instead of picking his spots, Darby is expected to defend the championship regularly and continue delivering high-level matches week after week.

“And this is the kind of pace Darby Allin fights when he's a champion. We've seen this before with Darby, but never as the world champion until right now. It's really amazing to see him in this mode as a world champion that will take on anybody and is willing to have great matches every single week on AEW TV.”

Darby Allin’s reign is shaping up to be defined by consistency, risk-taking, and frequent defenses — a style that fits his reputation and keeps the pressure on every challenger lining up for a shot at the title. With AEW continuing to stack its roster with hungry contenders, the real test for Darby Allin may not be winning the championship — it will be holding onto it while facing wave after wave of challengers who see him as the target.
