Will Ospreay is finally getting back in the ring as AEW World Champion, and AEW isn’t exactly handing him a soft landing.
During the September 5 episode of AEW Collision, the company announced that Ospreay will face David Finlay in an AEW World Championship Eliminator Match on the September 9 Rebel Heart edition of Dynamite.
That makes it Ospreay’s first match since defeating Kenny Omega at All In: London to become AEW World Champion on August 30. Ospreay survived a brutal fight at Wembley Stadium before finally putting Omega away with the Hidden Blade to take AEW’s top prize.
Finlay isn’t getting an automatic title shot, though. The match is an Eliminator, meaning a win over Ospreay would put him in position to earn a future shot at the AEW World Championship. And that wasn’t the only thing AEW loaded onto the September 9 card.
Swerve Strickland, Kofi Kingston and Austin Creed will defend the AEW World Trios Championships against The Conglomeration. New Level and Swerve are already coming off their first successful title defense against The Rascalz, so now they’re being thrown right back into another championship fight.
AEW also booked Darby Allin and Steven Borden against Mark Davis and Josh Alexander, while The Young Bucks will face Kyle Fletcher and Kevin Knight in a Tables Match.
The card already had Britt Baker’s first match since her AEW return locked in as well. Baker will team with Persephone and Hikaru Shida against Maya World, Hyan and Thunder Rosa, while Baker and Rebel are also bringing back The Waiting Room with Persephone and Shida as the guests.
The confirmed September 9 Dynamite lineup now includes:
- AEW World Championship Eliminator: Will Ospreay vs. David Finlay
- AEW World Trios Championship: Swerve Strickland & New Level vs. The Conglomeration
- Tables Match: The Young Bucks vs. Kyle Fletcher & Kevin Knight
- Darby Allin & Steven Borden vs. Mark Davis & Josh Alexander
- Britt Baker, Persephone & Hikaru Shida vs. Maya World, Hyan & Thunder Rosa
- The Waiting Room with Britt Baker, Rebel, Persephone and Hikaru Shida
