Carmelo Hayes’ absence from the SummerSlam card isn’t because he’s in trouble with WWE. The explanation is much simpler—and probably a lot more frustrating for Hayes’ fans.
During a recent Q&A, WrestleVotes was asked why Hayes was left off the SummerSlam card despite spending weeks wrapped up in the United States Championship storyline. According to TC, Hayes hasn’t done anything wrong, and there’s no backstage heat on him whatsoever.
“He’s not one of their favorite guys. That’s what it is. He’s not doing anything wrong. He doesn’t have any heat.”
The discussion then turned to another notable omission from Hayes’ year. After JoeyVotes pointed out that Hayes also missed out on WrestleMania 42, TC said it comes down to WWE consistently choosing the same group of talent when the biggest shows roll around.
“You can just see who their favorites are. I’m not trying to bury the guy here or say there’s heat. But they’re always going to pick their favorites. Ilja Dragunov is the same thing.”
The comments come just days after fans were furious when WWE announced Baron Corbin vs. Trick Williams for the United States Championship at SummerSlam without Hayes, despite him being involved in the rivalry from the very beginning. Even Baron Corbin admitted he’d like to see Hayes added to the match.
For now, though, it looks like Hayes will once again be watching one of WWE’s biggest shows from the sidelines—not because of backstage issues, but because, according to WrestleVotes, he simply isn’t viewed as one of the company’s top priorities.
