Road Dogg wasn’t just hanging around backstage at TNA Slammiversary while the two sides discussed a possible deal. He had apparently reached the point where he was already talking to wrestlers about bringing them into the company, only for his own TNA arrival to never happen.
During a PWInsider Q&A, Mike Johnson was asked what became of the expected deal between TNA and Brian “Road Dogg” James. From everything Johnson had heard at the time, this looked like something that was actually going to happen. Then it didn’t.
“All signs were they were going to sign a deal and then it didn’t happen. No one I have asked has ever explained why.”
That’s a pretty big turn considering how involved Road Dogg apparently became during his Slammiversary visit. He wasn’t officially working for TNA, but according to Johnson, he was already having conversations with talent about potentially joining him there.
“He went from being at Slammiversary and speaking to talents about wanting to bring them in to he himself not coming in.”
The strange part is that there still doesn’t seem to be a clear explanation for what stopped the deal. Johnson has asked around but hasn’t been given a reason, and whatever momentum existed over the summer appears to be gone for now.
“It’s always possible they could revisit down the line, but I haven’t heard anything about it, at all, of late.”
Road Dogg became available after stepping down as SmackDown’s co-lead writer in March 2026. By July, he was in talks about contributing creatively to TNA, with early reporting making it clear that nothing had officially been signed.
His appearance backstage at Slammiversary made those talks look a lot more serious. When Road Dogg didn’t attend TNA’s Albany television tapings afterwards, it was reported that negotiations were still moving forward and the two sides simply hadn’t finished the process. That eventually changed. Dave Meltzer later reported that talks had stalled and that Road Dogg and TNA were no longer close to a deal.
There’s still a chance the two sides pick things back up someday, but nothing appears to be happening right now. Until someone explains what changed, Road Dogg’s almost-return to TNA remains a deal that looked close enough for him to start thinking about the roster before suddenly going nowhere.
