Brock Lesnar may have called himself the past after putting Oba Femi over at SummerSlam, but people inside WWE do not believe The Beast has wrestled his final match.
Fightful Select states that WWE sources still expect Lesnar to compete again despite the way SummerSlam Night One ended. Lesnar stood in the wreckage of the ring, embraced Femi and made it clear that the younger star represented WWE’s future, but that moment was not viewed backstage as a definitive retirement.
Lesnar and Femi tore the ring apart during their Hell in a Cell main event, leaving plenty of questions about what comes next for the 49-year-old former WWE Champion. Triple H added to the uncertainty during the post-show press conference by admitting that Lesnar does whatever he wants and refusing to make any guarantees about his future.
The latest word from inside WWE points toward Lesnar having at least one more match left. There is no clear opponent or timetable at this point, but sources do not believe SummerSlam marked the end of his in-ring career.
The decision to have Lesnar close Night One was also not something he pushed for. PWInsider states that Lesnar did not angle for the main event spot and was not involved in changing the match order.
Lesnar versus Femi was not always planned to close the show. The Hell in a Cell match was originally set for a different position before WWE changed the format during SummerSlam week and moved it into the main event.
That switch gave Lesnar and Femi the final image of the night, with Femi being presented as the next monster ready to carry WWE forward. Lesnar may have handed the spotlight to him, but WWE sources clearly are not ready to treat that moment as The Beast’s farewell.
