Brock Lesnar did not demand the main event spot at WWE SummerSlam Night One after all. A new clarification says the decision to move Lesnar’s Hell in a Cell match with Oba Femi to the end of the show came from WWE creative, not Lesnar.
The match was originally planned to open SummerSlam Night One. That changed during SummerSlam week, when WWE decided the Hell in a Cell match made more sense as the closing attraction with Lesnar competing in Minneapolis.
PWInsider clarified the situation after an earlier belief backstage suggested Lesnar pushed for the final match. WWE sources with direct knowledge of the creative process said Lesnar was not involved in changing the match order or formatting of the show.
The decision was instead believed to have come from Paul Levesque. With Lesnar wrestling inside Hell in a Cell in a market closely associated with him, WWE moved the match from the opening slot to the main event.
That last-minute switch knocked CM Punk and Cody Rhodes out of the closing position. Their Undisputed WWE Championship match had been widely expected to headline Night One, but WWE ultimately saved Lesnar and Femi for the final fight. Lesnar and Femi made the most of the spot. The Hell in a Cell match ended with the ring torn apart before Lesnar embraced Femi and called him the future of WWE.
