Vince Russo believes WWE storytelling is becoming too complicated for casual viewers, and he says insider references are making things harder to follow.
While analyzing recent WWE promos, Russo argued that too much backstage-style language is being used on television. According to him, many of these references make sense to dedicated fans who follow wrestling news daily, but leave casual viewers confused about what’s actually happening.
Russo explained that storylines referencing behind-the-scenes business issues may feel important to hardcore audiences, but they often don’t translate into clear payoffs inside the ring.
“If you're a casual fan, if you're one of these people that aren't watching the show, that aren't on the internet every single day, okay, you don't have a clue to what they're talking about. None of the office sh*t is going to be paid off in the ring. The office shi*t is going to be paid off online. You're going to read about it.”
His comments point to a long-standing challenge in wrestling — balancing storytelling that satisfies hardcore fans while still staying accessible to newcomers. Russo believes leaning too heavily into insider talk risks pushing away viewers who don’t follow wrestling headlines closely.
That concern could carry major implications as WWE continues expanding its reach through television and streaming partnerships. If storylines become too complex or insider-focused, it may create barriers for new fans trying to follow along.
