Vince Russo may be finished with JCW, but that doesn’t mean he’s finished with wrestling altogether. After spending the past few days explaining why he walked away from the promotion, Russo has now revealed what it would actually take for him to accept another wrestling job—and it sounds like he’s learned a few lessons from his JCW experience.
While speaking on The Coach and Bro Show, Russo was asked whether he’d ever consider working for another major wrestling company. He didn’t completely shut the door, but he made it clear that he’s not looking to jump into another creative role like the one he just left. Instead, Russo said consulting is a completely different story because there’s no pressure to put his name on the finished product.
“There would have to be two things, and I’ve always said this, whether it’s Triple H, Tony Khan, whoever. I’ve always said I have no issue being a consultant because, as a consultant, my name is not on the show. As a consultant, I can float you great ideas all day long. Whether you choose to use them or not is up to you. That’s my role. I don’t care. I know the ideas are great and are gonna increase ratings. I don’t have an issue with that.”
Russo explained that the equation changes completely when he’s the person responsible for writing the show. After everything that happened in JCW, he says he’d only accept another position like that under one very specific condition: the person above him has to be a business-minded boss who’s willing to fully support his creative vision.
“But if you’re talking about another role like JCW, the only way this works is the Vince McMahon scenario. My supervisor is a businessman and not a wrestling mark. He’s a businessman, and he has my back. That’s the only way it works, bro.”
He then made it clear that his JCW run taught him exactly what he will and won’t accept moving forward. Russo said he’s no longer willing to put himself in an environment where he doesn’t have that kind of backing, regardless of the promotion.
“I will never put myself in another position like that unless those things are happening. Unless you understand this is a freaking business and, in order for me to be able to do my job, you need to have my back. If I don’t have a situation like that, I will never, ever put myself in that situation again.”
Russo isn’t saying he’s walking away from wrestling forever. He’s saying he’s done putting his name on a product unless he’s actually allowed to run it. After what happened in JCW, it sounds like he’d rather stay on the sidelines than jump into another creative role where he’s constantly fighting over the direction of the show.
