Triple H’s public tribute to WWE’s legendary “Sign Guy” Rick Achberger wasn’t the only emotional story to come out following his passing. Jonathan Coachman has now shared a backstage moment that fans had never heard before, revealing how Triple H made sure Achberger never had to pay for another WWE ticket again.
Speaking on The Coach and Bro Show, Coachman recalled that Achberger spent years working for Verizon, saving his money and traveling across the country to attend WWE events. Despite becoming one of the most recognizable faces in the crowd, Coachman said Rick never once asked WWE for special treatment.
“So what he would do, he’d work for Verizon, and he’d save up his money and buy a bunch of tickets. Then one time, after several years—he never asked for anything—he traveled to California for a show.”
Coachman said Triple H noticed the dedication and decided to surprise Achberger after the event. He asked Coachman to send Rick a text telling him not to leave the building, which immediately made Sign Guy think something had gone wrong.
“We’re talking around backstage, and Triple H says to me, ‘Hey, Coach, I want you to text him and tell him I want to meet after the show.’ I text him, ‘Hey, don’t leave. We need to talk after the show.’ He says, ‘Am I in trouble?’ I’m like, ‘You’re not in trouble.’”
When Achberger finally got backstage, Coachman said Triple H thanked him for years of support before making it clear that WWE didn’t want him putting himself in a difficult financial situation just to attend shows. That’s when Triple H made a promise that left everyone in the room stunned.
“So we brought him backstage, and he was so crazy about meeting Triple H. Triple H says, ‘We appreciate your support, but in no way, shape, or form do we want you going into debt or spending money you don’t have simply so you can watch wrestling shows.’
So Triple H said in front of many of us, ‘As long as I’m here, you will not buy another ticket to a WWE show. Every time you wanna come, you just text us. We got him a name, and you just let us know, and we got you.’”
Coachman explained that the decision wasn’t simply about rewarding a loyal fan. By that point, Achberger had become part of the WWE presentation itself, with many performers looking for his latest sign whenever they walked through the curtain.
“Because, Vince, he was worth way more than the $150 he was spending on a ticket because he became synonymous with us. His sign, when we were in the ring, we used to talk about, ‘Oh, he has a sign for me today.’ It was a badge of honor for us.”
Coachman’s story comes just days after Triple H paid tribute to Achberger following news of his passing, remembering him as a fixture at WWE events for decades.
