Santos Escobar’s WWE exit came at about the worst possible time.

During an interview with TMZ’s Inside the Ring, Escobar opened up about the day WWE released him and revealed he was only about six days removed from his second surgery when the call came in. He was already scrambling to get healthy enough to travel to Mexico for a television project.

“That day was one of the worst days you could have, or I could have had, in my career. And I’m going to tell you why. Six days or so after my surgery, so I’m doing therapy every day because I have to fly to Mexico and start this TV project, which I’m already stressed because of that.”

Escobar said things started feeling strange when he was told not to come in for his normal therapy session. Since he needed treatment before leaving for Mexico, he found another place in Orlando where he could continue working on his recovery.

“I wanted to do my therapy and I was told, ‘No, don’t come to do therapy,’ which really worried me because I needed that. I started looking around in the city here in Orlando to find another place where I could get my therapy because I was flying to Mexico on Monday.”

That’s where the WWE call finally came. Escobar didn’t beg WWE to reconsider. At that point, his biggest concern was getting his body right.

“I found a place, and while I’m doing my therapy, I get the call. I remember vividly, I had this hand in a bucket of rice and I was doing my grips, and with the other one, I was on the phone.”

“I told them, ‘Please talk to my attorney.’ And that was it. I don’t think those phone calls are to plea any case. I don’t think those phone calls are to make them change their mind. I was really focused on my injury, and that’s really the only thing I could think about.”

Escobar has since recovered and moved forward with the next stage of his career, but getting released while barely a week removed from surgery clearly left a mark.
