Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is lining up another serious acting swing, and this one sounds way heavier than the usual explosions and one-liners.
Deadline reports Johnson is set to star in and produce Free Byrd, a new action-drama coming from Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s Artists Equity. The movie has Johnson playing a Las Vegas motorcycle stuntman who hides his dementia diagnosis from everyone around him, including his mechanic brother, while chasing one last dangerous jump.
So yeah, this is not just The Rock doing another big action role. The movie is built around a guy trying to outrun something he cannot punch, slam, or muscle his way through.
Free Byrd will be directed by Greg Kwedar, who earned back-to-back Academy Award nominations for Sing Sing and Train Dreams. Kwedar will also rewrite the screenplay. The original script came from Jon Boyer and landed on the Black List, while The Peanut Butter Falcon duo Michael Schwartz and Tyler Nilson wrote an earlier draft. Johnson said the project hit him on a personal level as he and Kwedar started digging into the story.
“Free Byrd is a gift in many ways. Emblematic of life’s sacred beauty, as well as life’s harsh and callous reality. The subject matter of Free Byrd has become deeply personal to Greg Kwedar and myself as we’ve started to unpack this fateful journey together.”
Johnson also praised Artists Equity for backing the vision behind the film and said the story connects with everyone involved in different ways.
“Artists Equity have been incredible filmmaking and artistic partners, who not only share Greg’s vision for the film, but who are all connected to our story in their own unique and personal ways. When the mind of a loved one begins to slip away, life sure takes on a whole new meaning.”
Affleck and Damon are also fully behind the project. The two said Free Byrd is personal for their company and praised both Kwedar and Johnson.
“This is a project that all of us at the company have connected with personally. Greg is one of the most exciting writer-directors working today, and Dwayne is an extraordinary talent and person.”
Johnson has been pushing deeper into dramatic territory lately, especially with The Smashing Machine. Free Byrd looks like another move in that direction, putting him in a role where the real fight is not against a villain, but against time, family, pride, and his own mind.
The project also comes with serious producing power. Gil Netter, Fifth Season, Johnson’s Seven Bucks Productions, Kwedar, and Clint Bentley are all involved. That is a lot of muscle behind a movie that sounds built to give Johnson one of the most emotional roles of his career.
Dwayne Johnson has spent years proving he can carry massive franchises, but Free Byrd could be a different kind of test. This one is not about saving the world. It is about a man trying to hold himself together long enough to take one final leap.
