Stephanie Vaquer winning the WWE Women’s World Championship at a live event instead of on television caught plenty of people off guard. WWE apparently had a very specific reason for pulling the trigger when it did.
During a Q&A session, WrestleVotes was asked why WWE decided to have Vaquer defeat Liv Morgan for the championship in Santiago, Chile. According to the report, it came down to WWE realizing it had the perfect setting for the moment and not wanting to let it pass.
“For Stephanie to go over where she did was simply based on location. They had the moment right there, and they didn’t want to squander that moment, so they did a good job of figuring out how to get there with Becky Lynch involved. They wanted to reward Stephanie Vaquer in her hometown. That’s the reason she is the new champion.”
That also explains why Becky Lynch became such an important part of the finish. Lynch served as special guest referee and refused to complete Morgan’s pinfall, opening the door for Vaquer to turn things around and leave Santiago with the championship. The decision paid off with an emotional scene after the match. Vaquer stood in the ring with the title and told the Chilean crowd that 18 years earlier, she had been dreaming about becoming a WWE Superstar.
“18 years ago I was up there dreaming of becoming a WWE Superstar. Dreams are not impossible. This seemed impossible, but we’re going to keep making history because Chile f*cking changed!”
The September 12 victory gave Vaquer her second Women’s World Championship and ended Morgan’s 148-day reign. It also came only days after Morgan had beaten her on the September 7 episode of RAW.
Triple H later celebrated the title change by calling it “What. A. Moment.” WWE had the chance to give Vaquer one of the biggest moments of her career in front of the Chilean crowd, and rather than wait for another show, they decided that was the night to pull the trigger.
