Nick Aldis isn’t looking past SummerSlam—even if everyone else is. With speculation growing over whether his match with GUNTHER could lead to more matches, the SmackDown General Manager has made it clear he’s refusing to think beyond one night. Aldis says his entire focus is on delivering against GUNTHER, and whatever happens after that is completely out of his hands.
Speaking with MuscleMan Malcolm, Aldis was asked whether preparing for SummerSlam had reignited the desire to wrestle more regularly or if all of his attention remained on GUNTHER.
“I am. I’m 100% fully focused on SummerSlam.”
Aldis went on to explain that he entered this opportunity without expecting it to turn into anything bigger, and he’s approaching the match with exactly the same mindset. Rather than worrying about what WWE may have planned after SummerSlam, he’s putting all of the pressure on himself to perform at the level he believes he’s capable of.
“I came into this with no expectations. I come out of it with no expectations. The demands are only on myself. Like, you know, I’m demanding of myself to put in a performance worthy of what I believe to be my pedigree and my level. After that, it’s out of my hands, right? It’s in God’s hands. And it’s also about any number of different factors. It can be, you know, it’s about the audience. It’s about our fans. It’s about the circumstances with what’s available.”
He also shut down the idea that he’s already thinking about what this match could lead to. Aldis admitted he never expected to be in this position in the first place, so he’s not interested in mapping out another chapter before this one is even finished.
“I never thought… I didn’t know this was happening. I didn’t expect this to happen. So, I’m certainly not going to then go to the, ‘Oh, now I can do this and this and now it’ll lead to this.’ No.”
Instead, Aldis said there’s only one thing on his mind before he steps into the ring with the former World Heavyweight Champion.
“Now all that matters is I have to deliver at SummerSlam.”
Aldis’ comments come after we had reported that WWE still views the match with GUNTHER as a one-time appearance, although that could change if Aldis delivers a standout performance and both the audience and WWE officials want to see more. For now, though, Aldis isn’t buying into any of that speculation. His only concern is making sure he delivers when the bell rings, leaving everything else to sort itself out afterwards.
