The wrestling world’s ALS Ice Bucket Challenge just got one of its biggest names—and Mick Foley wasn’t about to do things halfway. Instead of taking one bucket of ice water, the WWE Hall of Famer stood beside Rebel and let Britt Baker dump three buckets over his head as the challenge continues spreading across the wrestling industry.
Foley shared the emotional video on Instagram, using the moment to give the focus where he felt it belonged: on Rebel and the fight she’s facing against ALS.
“In all of my years in the wrestling business, I have known many tough individuals. But I can assure you — none are as tough as my friend @rebeltanea.”
Foley said Rebel’s strength has left a lasting impression on him, especially as she continues battling Lou Gehrig’s disease.
“As you may or may not know, Rebel is valiantly fighting ALS — also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. While this would be enough to make even the toughest of person despair, Rebel has faced her condition with grace, dignity and a strength that I have rarely seen in my 61 years on this planet.”
He also used the opportunity to call for something wrestling fans don’t always agree on—putting rivalries aside. Referencing Kevin Owens’ recent comments about the challenge, Foley said this is bigger than any promotion.
“In wrestling, there can be a degree of loyalty with fans that can sometimes veer into tribalism. But as Kevin Owens noted, some moments and causes are bigger than that and this is one of them. I hope with this #IceBucketChallenge, we can overcome that tribalism — if even for a brief moment — and come together as a broader community for Rebel. If anyone deserves it, it is her, and it is this cause.”
Then came the nominations. Foley challenged Kevin Owens, Kevin Nash and one of the biggest names in entertainment to keep the challenge moving.
“With that in mind, I would like to nominate three friends of mine to participate in the Ice Bucket Challenge: Kevin Owens, ‘Big Sexy’ @realkevinnash, and…… drum roll please…… @therock! WE LOVE YOU REBEL! …have an ice day!”
Foley is just the latest wrestling star to join what has become a company-wide show of support for Rebel. Over the past several days, names from WWE and AEW alike—including Sting, Tony Khan, Harley Cameron, The Young Bucks, Anna Jay, Jack Perry and Luchasaurus—have all accepted the challenge while encouraging donations and spreading awareness for ALS. If Foley gets his wish, The Rock could soon become the latest major name to take the plunge.
