Lexis King isn’t exactly accepting WWE’s decision to retire the Speed Championship quietly. After having the title taken away without ever losing it in the ring, King says WWE had to get rid of the championship because nobody in NXT could catch him.
King took to Twitter after WWE officially retired both Speed Championships during the September 1 episode of NXT. Instead of treating the decision like the end of his reign, King claimed the company simply had no other way to take the title from him.
“Nobody in NXT could catch up to me, so they had to strip it from me…”
King then turned WWE’s decision into something much bigger. He claimed “the establishment” has felt threatened by him from the beginning and made it clear that retiring his championship isn’t going to change what he believes belongs to him.
“We’ve said it from the beginning, the establishment feels threatened by our very presence!”
The physical Speed Championship might be gone, but King isn’t giving up the title he gave himself along the way. As far as he’s concerned, WWE can take away the belt, but it can’t take away his “BirthRight” or his claim to being the “Fastest Man Alive.”
“They can take away MY championship but they can’t take away OUR BirthRight!!! The Fastest Man Alive is a title that will belong to me INDEFINITELY!!!”
WWE officially pulled the plug on both Speed Championships during NXT. Zaria first announced that she was retiring the Women’s Speed Championship after winning the Triple Threat title unification match against Wren Sinclair and Kali Armstrong at NXT Heatwave.
King then approached NXT General Manager Robert Stone to find out what that meant for his championship. Stone informed him that the men’s Speed Championship was being retired as well. That means King’s reign ended without anyone actually beating him for the belt.
WWE may have retired the Speed Championship, but King clearly has no plans to retire the character that came with it. The belt is gone, but the “Fastest Man Alive” apparently plans on keeping that title indefinitely.
