Kyle Fletcher’s AEW Double or Nothing return looked shocking on-screen, and now he’s revealing how the whole thing came together behind the scenes.
While speaking on his vlog, Fletcher revealed how his comeback came together after two months away from the ring. He explained that he originally believed surgery was likely after his injury, but a trip to Jacksonville changed everything.
“I have taken a plane from Chicago down to Jacksonville, Florida, had a meeting with a doctor/surgeon down there, and have flown back to Chicago. So I’m home now. I expected to film a lot more stuff when I went down to Jacksonville, because I assumed I was going there for the appointment and then possibly having surgery soon after that. However, the fact that none of that got filmed—and I’m speaking to you again now from Chicago—means I don’t have to have surgery. So, awesome news. I was given initially a 90% chance of surgery. No surgery required—just healing.”
Kyle Fletcher then showed the next step in his recovery, revealing that he had finally been cleared by his physical therapist to get back inside a wrestling ring for the first time in two months.
“Good afternoon slash good evening, ladies and gentle friends. Today is a very big day in my recovery—a very exciting day. If you want to have a look where we are… well, I’m not in the ring right now—Sky is in the ring right now—but today is the day. Earlier this week, my PT cleared me to get in the ring for the first time. So that’s what we’re going to do today. It’s been two months since I’ve been in a professional wrestling ring. I feel like I haven’t been myself. And now it’s time. It’s time.”
Fletcher clarified that being cleared by his physical therapist was not the same as being officially cleared to wrestle by AEW. However, it allowed him to begin the process of working with AEW doctors ahead of Double or Nothing in New York.
“All right, to get you guys up to speed a little bit—earlier this week, my physio, my PT, the man who has been doing all of my rehab, pretty much gave me the all-clear. We had our last session earlier this week. That doesn’t technically mean I’m cleared to return to the ring, but now I can go back to work and start the process of the AEW doctors clearing me to get back in the ring, which is what we’ve been waiting for. So this Sunday is Double or Nothing in New York. I will be there, and I will start talking to the doctors about what a return to the ring looks like.”
Before heading back to AEW, Fletcher said he wanted to look the part again after spending weeks away from television: “I wanted to show up back to work looking like my best self, so I got rid of the hair, got rid of the beard—literally all my physical appearance maintenance that I haven’t been doing until today.”
Once he arrived for Double or Nothing, Fletcher revealed that AEW had to sneak him into the venue in disguise so his return would not be spoiled. He joked that the plan was supposed to be stealthy, even though he did not exactly blend in.
“Stop talking about pooping, everybody. We have very sneakily made it to the car, and now we will sneakily drive to the venue and then sneakily sneak into the venue. We’re being very sneaky today. Very sly. I definitely don’t stick out like a sore thumb—no one’s going to notice whatsoever. So incognito I am.”
Fletcher then pointed out that this was a first for him, as he had never been hidden while entering a venue before: “This is the first time I’ve ever been snuck into a building.” He also laughed at how obvious the whole setup probably looked, joking about being covered up while carrying a bright bag.
“You see a dude in a wheelchair covered with a black cloth with a massive pink bag—oh my God, I wonder who that is.”
Before the return, Fletcher admitted that he was nervous because he had spent two months away from the ring and did not feel like the performer fans knew.
“Nervous? Yes. I think it still doesn’t feel real. I just feel like this person who’s been at home for eight weeks sitting on the couch. I don’t feel cool.”
After the segment was over, Fletcher reflected on how quickly the moment passed. Even though he had spent so long building toward the return, the actual appearance felt like it was over almost instantly.
“It’s over now. It’s a very weird feeling because you build up this moment for so long, and then—even two minutes, even three minutes—it just goes by in the blink of an eye. That’s really what it felt like.”
Fletcher then described the emotional weight of returning after injury, saying that even an eight-week absence made him feel disconnected from being a wrestler.
“What an overwhelming rush of emotions. I wasn’t out for that long—only eight weeks or two months—but I didn’t even feel like a pro wrestler anymore. I felt like a guy who just stayed at home on the couch and worked out.”
Fletcher returned at Double or Nothing after Konosuke Takeshita defeated Kazuchika Okada to win the AEW International Championship. After initially hugging Takeshita, Fletcher turned on him and laid him out, making it clear the Don Callis Family celebration was over before it even started.
Kyle Fletcher may have been away for only two months, but his return immediately changed the direction of the Don Callis Family. After everything he revealed in his vlog, it’s clear his comeback was planned with secrecy, emotion, and one very ugly betrayal in mind.
