Keith Lee’s AEW return may not just be delayed—it may never happen.
For more than two years, fans have been waiting for The Limitless One to resurface in AEW. There were injury updates. There were reports of backstage discussions. There was always the feeling that a comeback was somewhere down the road. Now, Bryan Alvarez says the belief around the wrestling business has taken a much darker turn.
While speaking on Wrestling Observer Live, Bryan Alvarez revealed that the people he’s spoken to don’t think Keith Lee is simply done with AEW. They believe he may be done with wrestling altogether.
“There’s been a lot of talk about Keith Lee over the last couple of days. From talking to people, the belief within the business is that Keith Lee is done.”
Alvarez made it clear he wasn’t talking about Lee eventually popping up in another promotion. If that’s how things play out, then the comeback fans have been waiting years to see isn’t coming.
“We’re not talking like when he’s done with AEW, he’ll go elsewhere. It is believed that he is likely just retired. So, we won’t get the return to AEW if that is the case. That’s what everybody believes right now. That’s the update on Keith Lee.”
That’s a very different picture from the one that emerged just weeks ago. We had previously reported that AEW had discussed bringing Lee back to television several months earlier. There were tentative creative plans for a return, but nothing ever came from those talks, and it’s unclear if Lee himself was even aware they had happened.
Lee hasn’t wrestled since defeating Brian Cage at AEW Collision: Holiday Bash in December 2023. After being pulled from Worlds End that same month, he later revealed he’d been dealing with an injury that had lingered since 2022. Even while he remained off television, Lee repeatedly told fans he was healthy and that the timing of any return wasn’t up to him.
“I am quite fine. It is not up to me when it comes to a return. But blessings to you as well. I’ve been good for quite some time, though I do appreciate the concern. But no campaign required. Things happen the way they are suppose to, and eventually, the purpose will show itself.”
Keith Lee still hasn’t publicly called it a career, so until he does, there’s always a chance he proves everyone wrong. But if the people Alvarez spoke to are right, then the comeback fans have been waiting years to see may never happen.
