Chelsea Green finally got her championship celebration. A few minutes later, WWE had her staring at the lights—and fans immediately started asking what the point was.
Green opened the August 7 episode of SmackDown celebrating her Interim WWE Women’s Championship win at SummerSlam, but by the end of the night she had been pinned in a tag team match after interference from Nia Jax and Lash Legend. That finish didn’t sit well with a lot of viewers.
The backlash hit Twitter almost as soon as the match ended. One fan wrote: “Why are you making Chelsea Green eat a pin already???” Another questioned why WWE would beat its newest champion so quickly.
“Making your women’s champion be a jobber for Fatal Influence in her first match since winning the title is certainly a choice.”
That’s not all because others felt the finish sent the wrong message about Chelsea Green’s reign before it had even begun.
“How do you want us to care about these superstars when you pin your champions a few days after winning?”
Another post pulled no punches, making it clear they were absolutely disgusted with WWE’s decision and that no one should care about Chelsea Green.
“Pinning your new WWE women’s champion is disgusting. Thanks for letting us know yall don’t give a f*** about Chelsea Green.”
The reaction was a major turnaround from how the night began. WWE rolled out the red carpet, filled the ring with balloons and fireworks, and gave Green a full championship celebration after the biggest victory of her career. But once Fatal Influence arrived, the celebration quickly turned into another match.
By the time SmackDown went off the air, fans weren’t talking about Green’s title win anymore. They were talking about the decision to beat a brand-new champion before her reign had even found its footing.
