Jerry Lawler says he’s still officially under WWE contract, even as he continues recovering from serious health issues and a recent knee replacement surgery.
During an appearance on the Going Ringside podcast with Scott Johnson, the 76-year-old wrestling legend opened up about how difficult life has become following multiple strokes and his latest surgery.
“Doing fine. Doing great. Looking around, there’s this big crowd, and it’s awesome to see all these people here. I’m just sort of hobbling around right now. I just had a knee replacement, my right knee, and it’s doing good, but it’s a little bit hobbling here and there.”
Lawler later admitted that things have been especially hard at home while recovering alone.
“I seem to be doing pretty well. People just see me like this, but at home, I live by myself, and it’s a little tough there right now, but it seemed to get better.”
When asked about possibly returning to WWE commentary, Lawler made it clear that’s probably not happening anytime soon — although he confirmed he still remains signed with the company.
“It’s not good for [commentating] right now, but I’m still under contract with them.”
Lawler also reflected on his long history with Vince McMahon and even claimed he helped shape McMahon’s very first heel character during their Memphis feud in the early 1990s.
“The first time Vince ever became a heel, he came down to Memphis and worked against me, and nobody else saw it.”
When asked directly if he trained McMahon how to become a heel, Lawler laughed and responded:
“Sort of. He learned a little bit from me there.”
Lawler also spoke warmly about longtime commentary partner Jim Ross and confirmed the two still keep in touch regularly.
Despite everything he’s gone through medically, Lawler said the knee replacement has at least helped him get back out traveling for conventions and appearances again.
“I’m traveling more…I’m doing something every weekend.”
Lawler has been part of WWE for more than 30 years and remains one of the most recognizable voices in wrestling history.
