AJ Lee wasn’t expected to be part of SummerSlam. Now, that may no longer be the case.
Speaking during a Q&A, JoeyVotes of WrestleVotes revealed that AJ originally wasn’t scheduled for WWE’s biggest event of the summer. However, with several recent changes to the card—including three open spots in the Interim WWE Women’s Championship Ladder Match—her name has suddenly become much more interesting.
“The only thing that we knew was that initially she wasn’t scheduled to be part of SummerSlam. But things change, injuries happen, matches get shuffled, and there are now three open spots for a ladder match. It just also so happens CM Punk is on SmackDown too.”
That marks a notable shift from a previous report, which stated AJ had wrapped up her latest WWE run following WrestleMania 42 and wasn’t expected back in the immediate future.
While JoeyVotes stopped short of saying AJ is now planned for the show, TC believes WWE suddenly has the perfect opportunity to bring her back. Rather than building an entire storyline around her return, he argued that the ladder match gives WWE a simple way to surprise fans while adding even more star power to one of SummerSlam’s biggest matches.
“This is a good opportunity for WWE to open that door for her to come back for a match she wasn’t slated for. She doesn’t have to be on SmackDown or doesn’t even have to win. It’s like, ‘Hey, you’re available, and you can fill a role in this match that elevates the match and provides a surprise. So I would not be surprised if AJ Lee is a part of that ladder match.”
Earlier this year, the expectation was that AJ’s latest WWE run had quietly come to an end after her feud with Becky Lynch, with no immediate creative plans in place. Now, thanks to injuries, lineup changes and three unexpected vacancies in one of SummerSlam’s biggest matches, that outlook suddenly isn’t as clear.
Nothing is guaranteed at the time of writing, but AJ Lee returning at SummerSlam in Minnesota no longer feels as unlikely as it did just months ago.
