WWE may have just found itself dragged into a bizarre gimmick controversy after an indie wrestler publicly accused the company of stealing his heavy metal-inspired character and handing it to Lizzy Rain.
Indie wrestler Phil Noir took to Twitter, accusing WWE of stealing his heavy metal-inspired wrestling character and handing it directly to Lizzy Rain. Noir claimed he previously wrestled under “The Heavy Metal Kid” persona years ago and blasted WWE for allegedly recycling the concept.
“GIMMICK INFRINGMENT The Fed thought they could steal my gimmick and give it to some broad and get away with it.”
Noir then pointed to his old independent wrestling run as proof that he had been using the heavy metal presentation long before Rain arrived in NXT.
“I was ‘The Heavy Metal Kid’ at Extremly Xtreme Wrestling in Jackcrack, Georgia from April 03 to May 03. DO YOUR DAMN RESEARCH. Originality is dead.”
The accusation immediately caught attention online because Lizzy Rain’s WWE presentation heavily leans into a hard rock and heavy metal aesthetic, complete with aggressive styling, music references, and her “Thunderstruck” finishing move.
At this point, there’s obviously no indication WWE literally based Rain’s character on Phil Noir’s old indie gimmick from over two decades ago. But the accusation itself still managed to get fans talking online, especially given how quickly Rain’s NXT debut was put together behind the scenes.
Bottom line: Lizzy Rain’s heavy metal-inspired WWE character is already getting attention — but now an indie wrestler claims WWE lifted the idea directly from his early-2000s gimmick and handed it to NXT’s newest breakout star.
Do you think wrestling gimmicks today are becoming too recycled, or is this just another case of wrestling fans seeing similarities everywhere? Drop your thoughts below.
