Dave Bautista is officially stepping into the boots of Kratos.

Variety reports that the former WWE Champion and “Guardians of the Galaxy” star has landed the lead role in Amazon Prime Video’s live-action “God of War” series after Ryan Hurst was forced out due to an injury suffered during production.

Hurst had been announced as Kratos back in January, but he tore his bicep on set and needed surgery. His recovery would have pushed production into 2027, leading Amazon and Sony to recast the role rather than wait.

Bautista had already been in talks for the part, and now the deal is done. With him locked in, filming is expected to restart in the coming weeks. There’s also a major reset coming behind the scenes because every scene Hurst already filmed as Kratos will have to be shot again with Bautista.

Amazon has already ordered two seasons of “God of War,” with both seasons set to film back-to-back. Production originally started in Vancouver in February before Hurst’s injury threw everything off course.

The role is certainly in Bautista’s wheelhouse. Kratos is one of gaming’s most physically imposing characters, and Bautista brings both the size and acting experience needed to jump into the part without spending months completely rebuilding his body for it.

The series will follow the story from the two most recent “God of War” games, focusing on Kratos and his young son Atreus as they travel to spread the ashes of Kratos’ wife and Atreus’ mother, Faye.

The official description lays out the father-son story at the center of the series.

“Father and son Kratos and Atreus embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.”

Callum Vinson remains attached to play Atreus, while the cast also includes Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Danny Woodburn and Jeff Gulka as Brok and Sindri, and Ed Skrein as Baldur.

Ronald D. Moore is serving as writer, executive producer and showrunner, while Frederick E.O. Toye will direct the first two episodes.

Bautista has spent years building a serious Hollywood career after leaving WWE behind, and now he has one of the biggest video game characters on the planet in his hands. The casting change cost Amazon plenty of time and means reshooting Hurst’s material, but production now has its new Kratos and is preparing to get moving again.
