Conor McGregor’s UFC comeback ended with another wrecked leg, and now he is headed for surgery before even thinking about fighting again.

The former two-division champion returned to competition last weekend against Max Holloway, making his first appearance in more than a decade. The comeback barely lasted a minute. McGregor injured his right leg almost immediately, slipped and fell several times, and left referee Mike Beltran with no choice but to stop the fight after only 69 seconds.

The ugly scene sparked immediate questions about whether McGregor had fought for the final time. He has now revealed that an operation is coming, though he did not disclose exactly what doctors will be repairing. McGregor laid out his recovery plan in a lengthy Instagram post focused mostly on his faith and resisting sin.

“Surgery. Prehab. Return to martial arts practice. Go again. Final fight of the contract. Please God!”

That means McGregor is not planning to limp away after the Holloway disaster. Surgery comes first, followed by rehabilitation and an eventual return to training. The 37-year-old still has one fight remaining on his UFC contract and wants to use it once his body is healed.

Before the Holloway fight, McGregor said the UFC planned to hold his contract finale in April 2027. Another surgery now puts that timeline in serious doubt. McGregor has not won since knocking out Donald Cerrone in 40 seconds in January 2020. He has lost three fights since then, with two of those defeats ending because of injuries.

His latest comeback was supposed to prove he could still compete. Instead, it lasted 69 seconds and sent him straight toward another operating room. McGregor wants one final UFC fight, but everything now depends on the surgery, the recovery and whether his body can survive another training camp. He may still control how his contract ends, but his damaged leg gets the first vote.
