Conor McGregor’s UFC comeback lasted only a matter of minutes before everything fell apart.

McGregor’s fight against Max Holloway at UFC 329 was stopped in the opening round after the former two-division champion appeared to seriously injure his right knee.

The trouble started with McGregor’s first kick. His right leg appeared to give out, sending him crashing to the canvas. McGregor managed to get back up, but he fell again moments later and clearly could not put normal weight on the leg. Officials did not waste any time. The fight was called off before Holloway could continue attacking an injured McGregor.

The scary scene came five years after McGregor last competed inside the Octagon. His previous fight also ended with a major leg injury when he suffered a broken leg against Dustin Poirier in 2021.

McGregor entered UFC 329 looking to prove he could still compete at the highest level after the longest layoff of his career. Instead, his return ended almost immediately due to another injury involving his right leg.

Holloway barely had a chance to settle into the fight. The two men first met in 2013, with McGregor winning by decision, but their long-awaited rematch never had a chance to develop.

The full extent of McGregor’s injury is not yet clear. He will likely need medical testing to determine whether the knee suffered serious structural damage.

McGregor waited five years to return, but his comeback ended in the worst possible way. Another major injury could now raise serious questions about whether fans will ever see him compete again.
