CM Punk and Cody Rhodes may have been on the same team inside Madison Square Garden, but it didn’t stay that way for long.
After Saturday Night’s Main Event went off the air, the two WWE stars found themselves in a heated confrontation that had to be broken up by Bobby Roode and Trick Williams. It all started with the Undisputed WWE Championship.
As the two continued celebrating their victory over Sami Zayn and GUNTHER, Punk accidentally caught Cody in the left eye while swinging the championship belt over his shoulder. So during a backstage interview, Cody immediately took issue with it and confronted his SummerSlam opponent.
“You cracked me in the eye with this title. It was an accident, right?”
Punk insisted there was nothing behind it: “100%. We’re fine. Calm down.” That only made things worse as Cody fired right back: “Calm down? You’re the one who always gets emotional out there.” At that point, Punk’s patience disappeared: “I’m emotional? What’s your problem? I’m not playing around with you.”
The exchange quickly escalated, with both men stepping toward each other before Bobby Roode and Trick Williams jumped in to separate them before things turned physical.
Considering Punk and Rhodes are already on a collision course for the Undisputed WWE Championship at SummerSlam, it didn’t take much for tensions to boil over. One accidental shot with the title belt was enough to turn a post-match celebration into another chapter in what’s becoming one of WWE’s most personal rivalries.
