Big Cass knows the Enzo Amore reunion rumors made his WWE return more complicated than it needed to be. According to Cass, the speculation got so loud before his comeback that plenty of fans apparently started believing Enzo was definitely coming back with him.
Speaking on The Sal Licata Show, Cass explained that the problem started almost immediately after news broke that he had signed with WWE again. Instead of his return being treated as a fresh start, his name was instantly linked with his former tag team partner.
“But yes, it makes it way more difficult than having a clean slate. Especially because when news came out of me signing with WWE, it immediately got linked to him.”
Cass recalled seeing the idea of an Enzo and Cass reunion spreading across wrestling podcasts. Before long, he believes speculation had turned into expectation, with fans convinced they were about to see the old team running it back in WWE.
“‘They’re coming back together. They’re going to be running it back together.’ A lot of podcasts ran with that story, and people believed it.”
Then Cass actually returned on the August 3 episode of RAW — and there was no Enzo. Instead, Cass showed up alone after eight years away and attacked Je’Von Evans, immediately establishing himself as a heel. Cass admits that after everything people had heard beforehand, seeing him walk out there by himself left some fans confused.
“So then I come back on my own, and some people are like, ‘Wait, what?’ And it kind of made it a little difficult.”
But Cass doesn’t think those expectations have stopped him from making this run work. He believes he’s done a pretty damn good job getting fans to boo the version of Big Cass they’re seeing now, which is exactly what he wants as a heel.
“But I think so far I’ve done a pretty damn good job with the situation I’m in, getting booed out of buildings, which is really the goal.”
Interestingly enough, Cass’s comments line up with something that was being discussed inside WWE earlier this month. WrestleVotes via Fightful Select reported that some members of WWE creative felt fans were too busy expecting Enzo to show up, making it harder to establish Cass as his own character.
And the Enzo talk wasn’t completely coming out of nowhere. Dave Meltzer previously reported that Enzo returning to WWE had been discussed and at one point appeared pretty close, but the idea was reportedly to keep him separated from Cass because WWE saw more potential in Cass as a singles star.
“There was talk of Enzo in NXT. It was talked to me like it was pretty much a done deal, but they were gonna keep Enzo and Cass apart because of the idea that if they put them together, Cass’s upside is very limited in that tag team based on how WWE does tag teams.”
Now Cass is teaming with Ethan Page, getting booed and building something completely separate from the act that originally made him famous. Fans may still have Enzo in the back of their minds, but Cass clearly thinks he’s finally giving them something else to associate with his name.
