Big Cass may have a bigger problem than wins and losses right now — because some people inside WWE apparently believe fans are too busy waiting for Enzo Amore to show up. With Enzo’s name continuing to hover around Cass’ return, there is now concern that the reunion speculation is making it harder for WWE to establish Cass as his own character.
According to WrestleVotes via Fightful Select, the idea is not something everyone in WWE creative agrees on. However, there are people within creative who feel the audience is expecting Enzo Amore to return, and that expectation is starting to limit what WWE can do with Cass on his own.
That creates an awkward situation because Enzo Amore is not currently signed with WWE. The latest wrinkle comes after Dave Meltzer previously explained on Wrestling Observer Radio that WWE originally had no interest in simply putting Enzo and Cass back together. The belief at the time was that reuniting them could cap Cass’ potential as a singles star. Meltzer said Enzo’s possible return had been discussed as something that appeared very close at one point, but WWE wanted to keep the two separated.
“There was talk of Enzo in NXT. It was talked to me like it was pretty much a done deal, but they were gonna keep Enzo and Cass apart because of the idea that if they put them together, Cass’s upside is very limited in that tag team based on how WWE does tag teams.”
That thinking may have gotten more complicated in recent weeks. Ringside News previously covered how WWE may have already cooled on Big Cass as a singles act after his loss to Dragon Lee on the September 28 episode of RAW. Meltzer even acknowledged that if WWE no longer sees Cass as a major singles project, putting him back alongside Enzo suddenly becomes a lot easier to justify.
“But now, with Cass in the spot that he’s in, being with Enzo may not be the worst thing in a tag team. So I suppose they could do that. Seems kind of weird. What does Cass need Enzo for when he’s beating these guys up all by himself anyway?”
Cass has still been presented as a physical threat. He recently interfered in Rey Mysterio and Dragon Lee’s match against Dominik Mysterio and JD McDonagh, dropping both Rey and Lee with big boots before standing tall. That attack came after Cass lost to Dragon Lee on the September 28 episode of RAW, another booking decision that raised questions about just how high WWE currently sees his singles ceiling.
Cass returned to WWE on the August 24 episode of RAW with a victory over Je’Von Evans, and the early presentation suggested WWE was trying to rebuild him as a serious solo threat. Now, however, creative has another issue to deal with: fans may be looking past Cass entirely and waiting for the other half of his old act to walk through the door.
That is what makes this situation so strange. WWE originally wanted Enzo and Cass kept apart because the company believed Cass had more upside on his own. Now some people behind the scenes apparently feel Enzo’s absence is still affecting Cass anyway, because the audience keeps expecting the reunion that WWE never intended to give them.
Enzo Amore is not under WWE contract right now, so there is no guarantee that reunion is coming at all. But if WWE really believes fans are waiting for Enzo every time Cass appears, the company may eventually have to either shut that door completely or walk straight through it.
