Sheamus isn’t ready for anybody to start putting the word “former” in front of wrestler just yet. The Celtic Warrior may be a free agent and enjoying some time away from the ring, but he made it pretty damn clear that he isn’t retired.
Speaking with Telemundo Deportes, Sheamus was discussing his future when the interviewer referred to him as an “ex-luchador.” Sheamus immediately caught the wording and corrected him, explaining that he’s simply taking a very long vacation from wrestling.
“Did you say ex-luchador? I’m just taking time off. I’m just chilling, I’m relaxing, I’m on vacation — a long vacation.”
That little correction is pretty notable considering there’s been plenty of speculation about what Sheamus plans to do next. His WWE contract expired at the beginning of October, making him one of the biggest free agents currently sitting on the sidelines.
And lately, people have been looking for clues everywhere. Sheamus is scheduled to appear at Big Event NY on November 14, which just happens to be the same day as AEW Full Gear. Dave Meltzer recently reported in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that Sheamus asked whether he could leave the convention early because he needs to attend a wedding.
That could obviously mean exactly what Sheamus says it means — the guy has a wedding to attend. But with him being a free agent and AEW holding one of its biggest shows that same day, wrestling fans were naturally going to start connecting dots whether those dots actually belong together or not.
There has at least been some interest in Sheamus outside WWE. Several AEW veterans have reportedly pushed for Tony Khan to bring him in, while TNA has also shown interest. However, there’s still nothing confirming Sheamus has signed anywhere, and previous reports indicated there hadn’t been substantial talks between him and AEW.
For now, Sheamus seems perfectly happy letting everybody else wonder what he’s going to do while he enjoys his break. Just don’t call him an ex-wrestler while he’s doing it, because apparently that’s one part of the vacation he needed to clear up immediately.
Where do you think Sheamus will eventually end up once his “long vacation” is finally over? Let us know what you think in the comments.
