Adam Copeland may have a retirement timeline in mind, but his AEW contract situation is apparently not that simple anymore.
While speaking to Clutch Points, Copeland addressed his future and admitted he is not even sure when his current AEW deal officially expires. Copeland previously suggested that his current contract, which was expected to run through 2027, could be his last, with retirement around age 53 as a possible target.
However, Copeland explained that injury time and outside projects have complicated that timeline. AEW has a history of adding time to deals when talent miss dates due to injuries or other commitments, and Copeland said that likely applies to him as well.
“I broke my leg, so there’s injury time added, and I had to go film Beekeeper [2] and Percy Jackson, so [that’s] added. Anytime I have to take a break, that gets added on the back end.”
The Rated R Superstar then admitted that with all of that added time, even he does not have a firm answer on when his deal is actually up: “I’m not even sure when it’s up.”
This comes after Copeland recently gave a brutally honest answer about retirement while speaking to Westwood One Sports. He said this eventual retirement feels different from the forced one he went through in 2011 because this time, he knows how to prepare for it.
“Um, you know, for me, I already had to do it once. So the second time, it’s like, ‘Alright, I know how to navigate this. I know what to do.’”
Now, after getting several more years in wrestling following his comeback, Copeland said the next retirement may be easier because his body is making the decision clearer.
“So I think this retirement is going to be the easy one, because it’s like—I’ve got no choice, man. My body’s just giving up. It cracks way too much. Arthritis is my best friend.”
While Copeland clearly knows the end of his wrestling career is getting closer, the exact timing is now less clear than ever. Between injury time, film projects, and possible contract extensions, the Rated-R Superstar may not know exactly when the clock runs out on his AEW run.
