Gunther beat Ricochet for the WWE Intercontinental Championship on an episode of SmackDown about month ago. The Ring General successfully retained the title against Shinsuke Nakamura last week on SmackDown. His next opponent was revealed on SmackDown in Montreal this week.

WWE booked a fatal-five-way match to determine the number one contender to Gunther’s Intercontinental Championship on SmackDown this week. Sheamus, Madcap Moss, Sami Zayn, Ricochet, and Happy Corbin squared off against each other for the spot.

Sheamus won the match after hitting The Brogue Kick on Happy Corbin. The Celtic Warrior will face The Ring General for the Intercontinental Championship at Clash at the Castle in Cardiff, Wales, on September 3, 2022. The match is expected to be super stiff.
