Baron Corbin’s first moments backstage after winning the United States Championship meant just as much as the title itself.
After ending Trick Williams’ reign at SummerSlam in his first major match since returning to WWE, Corbin has now revealed what was waiting for him once he stepped through the curtain—and it sounds like the locker room made sure he knew they were happy to have him back. Speaking on Busted Open Radio, Corbin said the reaction backstage was exactly what he hoped it would be.
“Absolutely. Everybody was stoked. It was a good ‘welcome back,’ ‘congratulations,’ ‘you have the title.'”
Corbin singled out producers Abyss and Nora Greenwald, saying they were among the first people to greet him after the match.
“Abyss and Nora were the producers, and Abyss is one of the sweetest humans. Nothing but hugs and, ‘Congratulations, you did it!'”
Even with everyone waiting to celebrate, Corbin admitted he wasn’t quite ready to jump into the moment. Instead, he stopped just before Gorilla Position, taking a few seconds by himself to let everything sink in before anyone reached him.
“Normally, when you walk through the entranceway, you walk right into Gorilla. But there’s always a little pocket right before you walk into Gorilla, between the entrance and where people can see. I kind of stood by myself for a minute, and they started coming out to me. I needed that moment to kind of come down. We’re back. I did it. And it’s like… let’s fuc**** go!”
Corbin’s emotional backstage moment came just minutes after he completed a remarkable comeback at SummerSlam, defeating Trick Williams to capture the United States Championship less than a year after returning to WWE. For Corbin, the celebration wasn’t just about winning another title—it was the realization that he’d fought his way back to the top of the company.
