WWE NXT fans may be getting more than just premium live events on ESPN Unlimited, as new details suggest the weekly show could be included in the deal.
After WWE and The CW Network announced a new streaming partnership tied to ESPN Unlimited, many fans questioned whether the deal only covered NXT premium live events or the weekly NXT series as well. Now, new information points to the weekly show being part of the package.
According to PWInsider, sources at ESPN believe the agreement will go beyond special events and include the full weekly NXT broadcast as part of CW Sports content. The report explained the expectation internally at ESPN regarding what will be included.
“For those who have asked about whether ESPN Unlimited would carry WWE NXT's weekly series or just WWE NXT PLEs, in speaking to a source at ESPN, the belief there is that the deal would include all of CW's sports library, including the NXT series.”
That clarification adds to the original announcement, which confirmed that CW Sports programming — including WWE NXT — would be available to ESPN Unlimited subscribers beginning this summer. While WWE had already stated that NXT premium live events would air on The CW Network, the exact scope of streaming coverage had remained unclear.
The original deal was framed as a way to expand the amount of sports content available to ESPN Unlimited users. ESPN vice president of direct-to-consumer strategy Emily Horowitz previously spoke about the value of adding more programming to the service.
“We think this is a real value add for our Unlimited subscribers. Adding more content makes that product as attractive as we possibly can.”
CW Network president Brad Schwartz also explained that the company chose to partner rather than launch another standalone streaming service.
“We were hunting for a streaming solution, and the thing that we knew was that the world doesn’t need another direct-to-consumer product. We decided our strategy was not going to be adding to that challenge for people and that we were going to partner with somebody to do it.”
If the weekly NXT series is indeed included, that would mean fans could watch the full show through ESPN Unlimited instead of relying only on traditional broadcast options. The broader deal is also expected to add more than 800 hours of live sports content to the ESPN platform, ranging from college sports to motorsports and wrestling programming.
With summer approaching and more details expected soon, the possibility of NXT’s full weekly series streaming on ESPN Unlimited could significantly change how fans access WWE’s developmental brand moving forward.
