The Royal Rumble isn’t going two nights. At least not yet. After WWE officially announced that the 2027 Royal Rumble is heading to Phoenix, Arizona, a new report says the company came much closer to expanding the event than fans may have realized.
According to WrestleVotes Radio on Fightful Select, WWE seriously discussed turning the 2027 Royal Rumble into a two-night Premium Live Event, with some people inside the company believing the change would happen as early as next year.
Instead, the current expectation is that the Royal Rumble will remain exactly as fans know it: For one more year. According to Joey Votes, those plans ultimately didn’t move forward.
“Following Dana White’s announcement that TKO and WWE will bring the 2027 Royal Rumble to State Farm Stadium in Phoenix, Arizona, we’re told WWE seriously considered expanding the event to a two-night format, with some internally believing that would ultimately be the direction this year. However, as things currently stand, the expectation within the company is that the Royal Rumble will remain a one-night event, albeit potentially for the final time.”
That doesn’t mean the idea has gone away. Far from it. The report claims WWE still views a two-night Royal Rumble as the long-term direction, with 2028 now emerging as the more likely target.
“We’re told there’s significant interest from within WWE to eventually turn the Royal Rumble into a multi-night destination event. The expectation is that this year’s 2027 Royal Rumble, which is announced for Phoenix, is going to remain one night—possibly for the last time.”
Not everyone is convinced that’s a good idea. WrestleVotes co-host TC pushed back hard against the concept, arguing WWE has already stretched too many of its biggest events across multiple nights.
“We’ve seen WrestleMania be diluted. We’ve seen SummerSlam now be diluted. I want to keep the Royal Rumble one night. I don’t want to see the women’s Rumble one night, and I don’t want to see the men’s Rumble the next night.
I think the Royal Rumble should always stay one night. I understand the revenue side of things and the money-driven aspect of the business, but sometimes you have to be smart when it comes to not diluting things too much. I think the Rumble is that perfect example of one that should always remain one night.”
WWE has already transformed WrestleMania and SummerSlam into two-night events, and the Royal Rumble appears to be next in line. For now, though, fans can expect one final traditional Royal Rumble in Phoenix before the company potentially takes another one of its biggest shows across an entire weekend.
