Persephone hasn’t even had time to settle into AEW, and people inside WWE are already asking the same question: What is Tony Khan doing?
The CMLL Women’s Champion has barely had a chance to build any momentum since arriving in AEW. Instead, she’s become someone who shows up, loses, and disappears again. That trend continued on the July 29 episode of Dynamite, where she came up short against Maya World in her TBS Championship match.
Apparently, that hasn’t gone unnoticed. Speaking on the July 30 edition of Wrestling Observer Live, Bryan Alvarez revealed that multiple people in WWE are completely confused by the way Tony Khan has been using Persephone since bringing her into the company. According to Alvarez, the reaction inside WWE is pretty blunt.
“I have heard from many people in WWE who are just baffled at Tony’s usage of Persephone. They’re just like, ‘What’s this guy doing?'”
And that’s not where it stopped. Alvarez said WWE sees a wrestler with star potential, but instead of watching her become one of AEW’s biggest new signings, they’re watching the reigning CMLL Women’s Champion pile up losses on television.
“She’s got so much potential. If her deal comes due, WWE’s gonna want her instantly. Meanwhile, all she does is show up on TV and do jobs as the CMLL Women’s Champion.”
That’s a very different conversation from the one surrounding Persephone earlier this year. Back in January, reports claimed she had picked AEW over WWE, only for WWE to push back and insist there were never direct negotiations because she was still under contract with CMLL. The company maintained it couldn’t legally speak with her despite having interest.
Fast forward a few months, and the discussion has completely changed. Instead of debating who won the race to sign Persephone, WWE is watching AEW’s booking unfold in real time and questioning why someone viewed as one of the brightest young stars in women’s wrestling has been reduced to losing matches despite walking into the company as the CMLL Women’s Champion.
If this report is accurate, WWE clearly hasn’t lost interest either. In fact, the company already knows exactly what it would do if Persephone ever becomes available again.
