Why WWE Stopped Running The Dusty Rhodes Classic

The Dusty Rhodes Classic used to feel like a big deal in NXT. Now it is gone, and the reason may be simple: WWE might not have enough extra talent in NXT to make the tournament work without wrecking the rest of the show.

The question came up on WrestleVotes Live when a listener asked why WWE stopped doing the Dusty Classic, especially since WWE seems more interested in building its own tag teams instead of signing established ones. TC read the question and put it right on the table.

“Why did they stop the Dusty Rhodes Classic? With WWE allegedly not looking to hire tag teams instead of creating their own, I feel a Dusty Classic would definitely help with that.”

Joey Votes said the issue comes down to the roster. It was not framed as Shawn Michaels or NXT creative hating the tournament. It is more about not having enough available bodies to fill a tag team bracket.

“I think it comes down to the roster that NXT had. They had it through 2024. I don’t know if it was well received that year. No indictment on Shawn Michaels or the creative staff there, but to have a tag team tournament, you need a lot of talent.”

That is the problem. A tag team tournament takes more than just a few names. WWE needs teams that are not already tied up in storylines, and NXT does not have the same stacked roster it had years ago. Joey said WWE can’t just pull wrestlers out of ongoing angles to fill the Dusty Classic.

“Talent that you’re not using elsewhere. You can’t pluck from different storylines necessarily to be in these tournaments. So back in the day when NXT had stacked, stacked rosters, it made sense.”

He also said the tournament could always come back later, but the last few years just have not had the right roster setup.

“Maybe they can get there again one day. But I just think over the last couple of years, they didn’t have the roster to pull off a tag team tournament.”

TC added that WWE’s whole developmental system is different now. NXT is not the only place where young wrestlers get reps anymore. WWE now has other projects like LFG and EVOLVE, so the Dusty Classic may not be needed the same way it once was. TC said the tournament had a purpose back then. It gave younger names TV time and helped get fresh talent in front of fans. Now WWE has other ways to do that.

“It was done for a reason, to get some of these young talent exposure that they’re now using for NXT and LFG differently than they had back then.”

Still, the Dusty Classic does not sound dead forever. TC said WWE could bring it back if they wanted to, but the way they use young talent has changed.

“If they pulled one out of their ass tomorrow and said we’re doing it again, I wouldn’t be surprised. But I just think the mindset of what they’re doing with the young talent has definitely changed. Especially EVOLVE is the other side of things too.”

That is why WWE stopped running the Dusty Rhodes Classic. NXT does not have the same deep roster it once had, and WWE may not want to force a tournament just to say they did one. The Dusty Rhodes name still means a lot in NXT, so fans are going to keep asking about it. But if WWE cannot build a strong bracket with real teams and real stakes, then bringing it back just for nostalgia would not help anyone.
