Vince Russo’s name suddenly getting thrown around with WWE again made it sound like one of the wildest creative comebacks imaginable was somehow on the table. Turns out, things apparently weren’t nearly that serious.
According to PWInsider, Russo was actually the one who reached out to WWE President Nick Khan over the summer looking for a potential role with the company. And that was pretty much as far as it got. WWE sources said there was never any real movement toward hiring Russo at any point in 2026. Russo also hasn’t publicly addressed whatever conversations he had with Khan.
That clears up a lot after Conrad Thompson dropped the claim that Vince Russo had been in talks about potentially returning to WWE creative.
“Hey, hey, it’s Conrad Thompson — and the whispers that shocked me the most this past summer was that the highly controversial Vince Russo was in talks to make a shocking return to WWE creative.”
Fightful Select later reported that people at WWE headquarters had heard about conversations between Russo and Khan, although nobody seemed to know exactly how serious they were. There was even talk that Russo either visited WWE HQ or was being considered for a visit.
Almost nobody actually working on WWE’s creative product seemed to know a damn thing about it. Agents, producers, writers and other staff hadn’t heard anything about Russo potentially coming back. Some influential people inside WWE apparently even laughed when they were asked about it and now we know why.
This also isn’t Russo’s first attempt at getting back into WWE. Vince McMahon briefly brought him back in 2002 with plans for him to run creative, only for that idea to fall apart almost immediately. Russo was offered a consultant role instead, turned it down and eventually went to TNA. Russo also admitted years later that he emailed McMahon offering to help WWE creative before McMahon’s exit from the company, but that went nowhere too.
So, there were apparently conversations between Russo and Khan. But Russo wasn’t secretly sitting around waiting for WWE to hand him the creative book. He reached out looking for a job, WWE never moved toward hiring him, and the whole thing died right there.
