Vince Russo’s name is somehow being connected to WWE creative again, and this one caught plenty of people inside the company completely off guard. There were apparently at least some conversations behind the scenes, but how close any of it came to actually happening is another story.
Writing for Uncrowned, Conrad Thompson revealed that one of the wildest rumors he heard over the summer involved Russo potentially making a return to WWE creative.
“Hey, hey, it’s Conrad Thompson — and the whispers that shocked me the most this past summer was that the highly controversial Vince Russo was in talks to make a shocking return to WWE creative.”
Fightful Select has since provided more details on what was apparently going on. According to the report, sources at WWE headquarters had heard that WWE President Nick Khan held conversations with Russo. However, Fightful was unable to determine how serious those discussions actually became.
There was also talk that Russo either visited WWE headquarters at some point or was at least being considered for a visit. The weird part is that apparently almost nobody else in WWE knew anything about it.
Fightful reported that agents, producers, writers and other staff who regularly travel with WWE had not heard about any potential Russo return. Some influential people within the company even laughed when they were asked about it.
Even people who work closely with Nick Khan apparently had no idea these conversations had supposedly taken place. According to the report, several of them only learned about the situation after Thompson’s article came out.
That leaves a pretty big gap between Russo having some level of contact with Khan and WWE actually considering putting him back on the creative team. For now, there’s nothing indicating Russo was hired or that a return ever reached the point where WWE’s existing creative staff needed to know about it.
Still, the fact that people at WWE headquarters heard about conversations between Russo and Khan makes this a pretty bizarre situation. Whether it was a serious attempt to bring him back, an exploratory conversation or something that never got beyond an early discussion remains unclear.
