For years, fans have wondered when WWE will finally pull the trigger on a Cody Rhodes heel turn. According to a new backstage update, the bigger surprise is that the decision reportedly isn’t WWE’s to make.
During a recent Self Made Session, Self Made Pro claimed Rhodes has complete control over his current status, including whether he stays WWE’s biggest babyface or embraces the dark side.
“I was told that Cody Rhodes’ status at this moment is completely up to Cody. I was told that the ball is in his court. I was told that if Cody wants to, he can pull the trigger on turning heel whenever he wants—he just has to say the word.”
If the report is accurate, it means there’s no waiting for a creative meeting or a last-minute green light from management. Whenever Rhodes decides the time is right, WWE is reportedly prepared to follow his lead.
That lines up with the way Rhodes has talked about the subject over the past few months. While appearing on What Do You Wanna Talk About? earlier this year, he admitted he isn’t against turning heel if the story naturally takes him there—but he’s not about to do it because fans on social media keep demanding it.
“I think that’s one of the things too where, like, people ask all the time, ‘When are you gonna turn heel?’ And it’s like, if that’s what the role requires at some point, sure. But right now, I get to just be me.”
Rhodes also explained that he’s enjoying his current run and isn’t interested in forcing a character change just to satisfy online fantasy booking.
“And sometimes being me means making a decision that maybe gets booed. Sometimes it means making a decision that gets cheered. But I’m not gonna suddenly start acting like something I’m not just because somebody online thinks that’s the move.”
Those comments marked another step away from the stance he held for years, when he insisted a heel turn wasn’t happening. Now, the conversation has changed from if he’ll ever do it to when—and if this backstage update is to be believed, that timeline reportedly rests with Rhodes himself.
Whether he decides to keep wearing the white hat or finally shock WWE fans with a long-awaited turn, one thing is clear: if the switch ever happens, it may be because Cody Rhodes wanted it, not because WWE told him to.
