Vince Russo sees a lot of upside in JCW, but he also admitted there is one behind-the-scenes issue that can make writing the show a real headache.
During a live stream promoting Total Non-Stop Agony: The Rise and Fall of TNA, Russo was asked by Violent Jay to name JCW’s two biggest strengths and weaknesses. Russo first said the biggest problem is getting people who stopped watching wrestling to give JCW a chance. Then he said he does not see many other weaknesses, but there is one issue that comes with the current structure of the promotion.
Russo explained that JCW talent are independent contractors, not wrestlers locked into company contracts. That can create real problems when stories are being written and someone important suddenly is not available for a taping.
“God, when when it comes to other weaknesses, man, I really don’t see other weaknesses. I mean, I‘m just being honest, you know. Joe knows sometimes it gets challenging because, you know, the the wrestlers on the roster are literally independent contractors.”
Russo said JCW is not yet at a point where it can keep wrestlers under contract. Because of that, long-term creative plans can get complicated when a key performer cannot make certain dates.
“You know, we’re not at a point where we could have wrestlers under contract. And sometimes that gets challenging when, you know, you’re writing storylines and all of a sudden a key player can’t make this date or that date.”
Russo said those situations force the creative side to adjust and figure things out on the fly. Still, he believes a future streaming deal could change the whole setup and allow JCW to lock talent down.
“You know, then you really got to get creative. But when we get that streaming deal, we will be in a position to uh get these guys under contract.”
For now, JCW is trying to build momentum with the roster it has, while Russo and Violent Jay continue pushing for the kind of streaming deal that could help stabilize the company’s future.
