The Undertaker Shuts Down Misconception About His WWE Backstage Role

For years, fans have assumed The Undertaker is one phone call away from WWE’s biggest backstage secrets.

After all, he’s still heavily involved with the company, makes regular appearances, works with AAA, and has become the guy WWE often sends to surprise Hall of Fame inductees. If anyone knows what’s really going on behind the curtain, you’d think it would be The Deadman. According to Undertaker, that’s completely wrong.

While speaking with Chris Van Vliet, Undertaker laughed off the idea that he’s plugged into WWE’s inner circle, revealing that fans give him far more credit than he deserves when it comes to knowing what’s happening behind the scenes.

The topic came up after Van Vliet brought up Undertaker’s recent role in surprising WWE Hall of Fame inductees. After explaining how that tradition started years ago with Stephanie McMahon, the conversation shifted to his wife, Michelle McCool, and whether he helped orchestrate her own Hall of Fame surprise. Undertaker admitted he wasn’t involved at all.

“No, I didn’t. No, you were there. We were actually promoting something on ESPN and I think Triple H popped up and surprised her with that.”

Van Vliet then asked the obvious follow-up: surely Undertaker at least knew it was coming? He didn’t: “No clue. No way.” That’s when Undertaker addressed what he says is one of the biggest misconceptions fans have about him.

Despite his legendary status and continued relationship with WWE, he says people assume he’s constantly in the loop when the reality couldn’t be more different.

“Everybody thinks that I know a lot more about the ins and outs and what’s going on at WWE. I barely know what’s going on at AAA.”

And that’s exactly how he wants it. Undertaker explained that staying out of WWE’s day-to-day business is a conscious decision. Unless it directly affects his own responsibilities, he’d rather not get involved or keep tabs on everything happening behind the scenes.

“I think I do it by choice. I just don’t… if it doesn’t affect what I’m doing or what we’re doing down there, then I kind of just stay out of it.”

For someone whose name has become synonymous with WWE, it’s an unexpected admission. While fans often picture The Undertaker as one of the company’s biggest backstage power players, he says he intentionally keeps his distance and leaves the day-to-day business to those running it.
