Brie Bella’s SummerSlam return ended with a legitimate injury, and Triple H confirmed she was sent to the hospital for scans after the show.
Brie teamed with Nikki Bella and Paige against Jacy Jayne, Lainey Reid and Fallon Henley during SummerSlam Night One. The concern started after Jayne hit a cannonball that drove Brie into the steel ring steps.
Brie immediately grabbed her right shoulder and continued favoring it throughout the rest of the match. A referee was also seen checking on her after the spot. She managed to finish the match, but her involvement in the post-match angle was noticeably limited. After Fatal Influence picked up the victory, Brie and Nikki turned on Paige. Nikki handled most of the attack while Brie delivered one kick and repeatedly clutched her shoulder.
Speaking during the SummerSlam post-show, Triple H confirmed Brie was hurt and had already received treatment backstage. Triple H said the injury appeared to involve Brie’s shoulder and admitted that it did not look good.
“No, she’s injured. I don’t have an update yet. She had some treatment here and has been taken to the hospital to get scans on it.”
“I know her shoulder seems bad. I don’t have that answer, though, but we will know soon.”
WWE does not yet know how much time Brie could miss, but Triple H made it clear the company will adjust its plans once the scan results come back.
“That’s the nature of the game, and we will pivot accordingly.”
He also said Brie’s injury appeared to be the only serious physical issue coming out of the first night of SummerSlam. The injury comes at a brutal time for The Bella Twins. Nikki had only just returned from an ankle injury, and Brie’s comeback match may have ended with her facing another extended absence.
Brie still finished the match and completed the heel turn on Paige, but WWE now has to wait for hospital results before deciding what comes next for the storyline.
