If you’ve ever wondered why AEW’s post-pay-per-view media scrums seem to go on forever, Tony Khan says there’s a reason—and he knows not everyone is happy about it.
While appearing on Fightful Overbooked, Khan was asked about a complaint that’s been floating around for years: AEW’s post-show press conferences regularly stretch well into the early hours of the morning, sometimes keeping reporters working past 2 a.m. Rather than brushing the criticism aside, Khan admitted he understands the frustration.
According to Khan, the lengthy scrums are intentional because he doesn’t want anyone who traveled to cover an AEW pay-per-view to leave without getting the chance to ask every question they came with.
“I hear that. I hear you. And that makes sense. There is the school of thought that since the people traveled to be there in person and I like to make sure that every person who shows up in person at the pay-per-view and comes and attends on behalf of the media has an opportunity to ask a question, whatever they want to ask. And I always stay until everybody’s had a chance to ask questions.”
Khan admitted that’s where things become complicated. The longer he stays, the longer everyone else has to stay too, but he believes that’s a worthwhile trade-off if it means reporters who spent time and money traveling to an event don’t leave empty-handed.
“So that is a double-edged sword, my friend, because I want all those people to be able to ask as many questions as they want, make sure that everybody who traveled to the pay-per-view leaves satisfied that they got the opportunity to ask all the questions they would want to ask.”
At the same time, Khan acknowledged the downside for journalists trying to file stories or recap the event before finally heading home.
“But I also understand for you recapping it, it can be very challenging. So, like I said, it’s a double-edged sword.”
For now, it doesn’t sound like AEW’s marathon media scrums are going anywhere. While Khan understands why some reporters would prefer shorter sessions, he says making sure every member of the media gets their chance to ask questions remains his priority.
Do you think Tony Khan should shorten AEW’s post-pay-per-view media scrums, or do you prefer his approach of answering every reporter’s questions? Let us know in the comments below.
