Thekla recently made it crystal clear why she committed her future to AEW long-term, but now she’s also revealing why fans should never expect to see her transform into a traditional babyface character.
While speaking on The Sal Licata Show, the AEW Women’s World Champion explained why she never saw herself as a babyface. For Thekla, the “toxic” label fits because it warns people exactly what they are getting.
“I was never going to be a babyface either, so ‘toxic’ is just like—you know—it tells you, ‘Be aware, danger.’ That’s me.”
When asked why she believes she could never be a babyface, Thekla kept it simple and said she enjoys breaking rules and pushing against authority. Thekla also said she believes people enjoy watching her embrace that side of herself on AEW television.
“I’m just an a**hole, man. I don’t like playing by rules. I don’t like bending down to authority. I’m just a little bit of a prick—and I’m having fun with that. And I think people like to watch me have fun being a prick. So there you have it.”
The comments come after Thekla recently explained why she signed a new multi-year deal with AEW. She said the company feels like the perfect fit and praised Tony Khan, the locker room, and the overall backstage environment.
“No, honestly, a no-brainer. Like, I love TK. I love working with him, and I love his energy backstage, and all the girls are nice. The locker room is quiet and peaceful, and I love my job. It’s cute, you know?”
She also made it clear she does not believe another company could currently offer her something better.
“I don’t think the grass is greener anywhere else because I’m sitting in a f***** flower garden, you know?”*
Thekla’s latest comments make it clear AEW is leaning into exactly who she is: sharp, arrogant, dangerous, and fully comfortable being disliked. With her long-term deal now locked in, it sounds like fans should expect much more of that version of Thekla going forward.
